Igor Cosy:

Shibuya's Hidden Gem for Upscale Izakaya Dining

Fig butter and eggplant appetizer at Igor Cosy in Shibuya

If you’re looking for a relaxed yet slightly upscale dining experience in Tokyo, I highly recommend Igor Cosy in Shibuya. I wish I could say I discovered this place on my own, but the truth is—I was introduced to it by a friend who always seems to know the best local spots.

When most people think of izakaya in Japan, they imagine the lively after-work pubs filled with salarymen and cold beer. And while those spots are great for what they are, Igor Cosy offers a more refined, intimate take on the traditional izakaya experience. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with soft lighting and thoughtful design, and the food? Some of the best izakaya dishes I’ve had in Tokyo.

Their year-round menu is already solid, but what really sets them apart is their seasonal offerings. When I first visited in the summer, they had katsuo tataki (seared bonito)—and I couldn’t get enough. It’s their most popular seasonal dish, and since quantities are limited, it’s best to order it early in your meal. Check their Instagram for updates—katsuo usually appears around March each year.

They also serve a rotating selection of donabe gohan, or seasonal rice dishes cooked in earthenware pots. Flavors like unagi (eel) or sweet corn vary by season. It takes a bit of time to prepare, so order it early and pace yourself—it’s surprisingly filling, especially after enjoying a few appetizers.

Speaking of appetizers, my personal favorite was the fig (ichijiku) butter. Sweet, tangy, and perfectly spreadable—it’s something I still think about. Even if you’re not big on starters, this is one worth trying.

A Few Extra Tips:

  • Reservations: Given its popularity, making a reservation, especially for weekend evenings, is highly recommended. You can make a reservation online through tabelog.

  • Perfect For: Igor Cosy hits the sweet spot for a date night, a relaxed-yet-impressive dinner with foodie friends, or anytime you're craving elevated Japanese comfort food in Shibuya. Keep in mind that reservations on tabelog are only available for groups of up to 7 people.
