New York Joe Exchange:
Tokyo’s Go-To for Affordable Vintage Fashion
April 19, 2025
If you’re looking for vintage clothing that’s both quirky and affordable, New York Joe Exchange is the place for you. With three locations—in Shibuya, Shimokitazawa, and Kichijoji—each shop offers a slightly different experience but shares the same fun, eccentric energy. Thanks to its low prices and offbeat finds, it’s especially popular among a younger crowd.
I personally frequent the Shibuya location since it’s the most convenient, but the Shimokitazawa shop is the biggest—and uniquely housed inside a repurposed public bathhouse. Even if you’re not in the market for vintage, it’s worth the trip just for the setting.
In Shibuya, you’ll find the store tucked away on the 5th floor of a building across from MUJI. Walk through the doors and you’re greeted by a sea of circle racks—T-shirts, button-downs, dresses, and more. The store carries a fairly even mix of men’s and women’s pieces, but I personally think the men’s section has stronger finds. Think old D.A.R.E. shirts, college sweatshirts, and quirky graphics—if that sounds like your vibe, you’ll enjoy the hunt.

Keep in mind that the store isn’t sorted by brand or style, so you’ll need to dedicate some time to the search. There’s also a back wall filled with accessories like belts, scarves, and hats, and a dedicated section for bottoms, including an impressive and affordable jeans selection. If you’re after vintage Levi’s, this is a great place to start.
One of the best tips? Check out New York Joe’s Instagram or X before visiting. They regularly post standout pieces with prices and release dates, so if something catches your eye, head there early on the drop day—I've scored an Aries T-shirt and Clarks Wallabees at incredible prices this way!
Bonus tip: On the first Sunday of every month, all locations host “The First Sunday Sale,” where everything in-store is 50% off. It gets busy, so show up early and be prepared to line up. If your Tokyo trip happens to align with it, this sale is 100% worth working into your itinerary.
