Nata de Cristiano:

Tokyo’s Famous Portuguese Egg Tarts Just Outside Harajuku

When you're in Japan, it's easy to fall into the mindset of eating only Japanese food—and honestly, you wouldn’t be wrong for doing so. But Tokyo has so much more to offer, and you'd be missing out if you didn’t explore beyond the usual. One perfect example? Nata de Cristiano.

Tucked away in the trendy Tomigaya neighborhood, this small but stylish shop specializes in Portuguese sweets, and their Portuguese-style egg tart is the star of the show. It sells out daily—and for good reason. The team trained at the renowned “tavi” restaurant in Porto, Portugal, mastering the craft of authentic egg tarts. The result is a refined, flaky, delicious treat that feels like a step up from your usual snack, which is why it’s especially beloved by locals. Most people buy their tarts by the box, so I recommend going early to secure yours before they’re gone. But, be prepared to wait—lines often stretch 20 to 30 minutes.

The closest station is Yoyogi-koen on the Chiyoda Line, though it’s also walkable from both Harajuku Station and Shibuya Station—each about 15 minutes away. Although the address is technically in Shibuya-ku, I include it with Harajuku because it makes more sense to pair the stop with a Harajuku itinerary. While it may seem slightly off the typical tourist path, it’s actually easy to work into your day. If you’re planning to explore Harajuku, consider starting at Yoyogi-koen Station, grabbing some treats from Nata de Cristiano, strolling through Yoyogi Park, and then easing into your Harajuku shopping from there.
